Picking Up and Understanding Nonverbal Signals
Lauren sighed. She’d just received an email from her boss, Gus,
saying that the product proposal she’d been working on wasn’t going to be
signed off after all.
It didn’t make any sense. A week ago, she’d been in a meeting with
Gus and he’d seemed really positive about it all. Sure, he hadn’t made much eye
contact, and he kept looking out of the window at something. But she’d just put
that down to him being busy. And, he’d said that "the project will
probably get the go-ahead."
If Lauren had known a little bit more about body language, she’d
have realized that Gus was trying to tell her that he wasn’t “sold” on her
idea. He just wasn’t using words.
The difference between the words people speak and our understanding of
what they are saying comes from non-verbal communication, otherwise known as
“body language.” By developing your awareness of the signs and signals of body
language, you can more easily understand other people, and more effectively
